Music has always been one of the largest influences in Neal’s life. From his early teenage years, he knew that music had a powerful hold over his future. Whether it was playing guitar, singing, or writing, in some shape or form, music would always find it’s way back into his life. With influences such as Dave Van Ronk, Townes Van Zandt, to Jason Isbell, and Ryan Adams, Neal’s songwriting remains focused on telling the condition of the soul. With his heart on his sleeve with every performance, Neal believes that the best songs stem from honesty.
Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Neal was quickly moved around the world with his family. From Egypt, Canada, it wasn’t until his teenage years in Argentina that he discovered the guitar and quickly realized that his life would never be the same. From an early age, Neal’s worldview was very different than most. At many turns in his life, his cultural surroundings exposed him to poverty and sickness in many Third World countries. Upon returning to Oklahoma as a teenager, he quickly saw that many of the same problems existed in different capacities at home in the most rural areas of his home state. It is with every line that he crafts that he seeks to expose the truth and honesty of those around him searching for the words to describe feelings they cannot name.
Neal currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee and has performed in Nashville and surrounding states for the past 3 years. He is a reoccurring songwriter with the Bluebird Cafe’s Sunday Songwriter Night and Songnest Live. He has performed as a solo musician and guitar player at countless venues in the Nashville area as well as around the country.
